What is our mission?

Organising an impactful design conference that will bring value to designers around the world and ultimately make a direct and tangible investment to the design community in Africa.

What kinds of talks and themes will be available?

This year's main theme is  "Design that challenges the status quo".
This means to challenge the mental models of the existing design hierarchy, the “ideal path/process” to become a designer, breaking cultural moulds of design ideologies.
A few examples of what this could mean:

  • Disrupting the market - "How this company changed the taxi market forever"
  • Challenging stereotypes -  "How this product is bringing order to the messy design scene"
  • Changing the community - "How this NGO created the first school of design in their country"
  • What makes you different, makes you better - "How non-traditional background brings value to a designer"

How is it different from other conferences?

  • We’re broadening the design horizon
  • As a truly Inter-continental conference, we make sure to include the continents that are often overlooked - Asia, Africa and South America. It is reflected in our choice of content and even in our team.
  • Attendees are buying transformation - not tickets
  • World-class Designer is not just a conference - it’s a foundation for a school. Every ticket an attendee buys equals 1 year of online design education, mentorship and job opportunities for 1 aspiring African designer.
  • Our program has no buzz words -
  • Enough of motivational speeches - our talks are focused on design that changes the world. Only genuine stories of design impact.

Is this an event about Design in Africa?

No. This event is about providing our attendees with knowledge and connections that will allow them to become true "World Class Designers". This includes learning from a mix of both international and African speakers that can contribute with different perspectives about how design works around the world.

What is Gumroad? Why are you selling your tickets there?

Gumroad is an online platform that facilitates the sale of products by creators directly to consumers. Their business model is in line with our values and will allow us to pay for upfront conference costs, such as platform licenses and advertising.

Is this conference for me?

If you want to achieve true excellence at work, meet designers from widely different backgrounds, find inspiration to take a leap or help change the world, this is the conference for you. You could be anyone like,

  • Experienced designers who are ready to challenge their established POV with the fresh perspective from another corner of the Earth.
  • Curious designers who don’t just simply want to boost their careers but to support a good cause and learn from African designers after the conference thanks to the reverse mentorship program.
  • Digital creatives that need the last push to join the design field.

What will I gain from this content?

  • The attendees can expect to learn about how design is used in companies and causes big and small around the world.

They can participate in demo’s and workshops from designers and design organizations for novel tools and processes they can use.

A world cafe type of networking opportunity where they can connect with designers from Africa and around the world for knowledge sharing sessions regarding anything and everything.
  • Every ticket will grant an opportunity to participate in the reverse mentoring program together with African designers after the conference.

I'm not in Africa. What can I do?

You can still join us! This is a completely remote and international conference and it is curated to bring together speakers from around the world. This means you'll have relevant content available no matter where you live.If you want to help even more, we would appreciate if you shared our conference with your friend and on social media.

What is a reverse mentorship program?

This program will start after the conference and will connect those interested among attendees to African designers.
In reverse mentoring, a junior team member enters into a "professional friendship" with someone more senior, and they exchange skills, knowledge and understanding. Our program encourages African designers to shed light on the environment, work culture and design ideologies with their worldwide counterparts.

What would be the audience mostly interested to learn?

Actionable insights about how people can change themselves and the world around them using design.

I'm not African. Can I speak at your conference?

Yes. This is a truly international online conference and our goals is to offer content from the best designers around the world. The event will run for 24 hours and move across 3 different timezones - American, European and Asian, so everyone is welcome.

What kind of content can I offer to you?

We are working with a few different formats:

  • Small talks - 15-20 mins
  • Keynote - 40 mins
  • Discussion - 60 mins
  • Demo - 30 mins
  • Versus battle - 60 mins
  • Workshop - (adjustable)
  • Reach out to us and we can figure out together what format would best suit your content.

Will you offer any kind of remuneration?

This is a mission-driven and non-profit initiative. This means all our speakers will be volunteering their time and expertise for this conference.

What does "one year of design education" means, really?

We'll provide the students with subscriptions and access to top of the line education, including platforms such as Coursera and Interaction Design Foundation and design tools and services, including those provided by the conference sponsors.

I loved this initiative! What is your ultimate goal?

Our main goal for this conference is to be able to afford online education for 2000 African students.

Who are you and what are your values?

We are group of 4 young designers hailing from various parts of the emerging world. We are passionate designers, looking to create an impact and showcase the promise we see in the future of the global design community. We value,

  • Radical candor
  • Internationalism
  • Social impact
  • Enjoyable experience for everyone, including ourselves
